***Dark San Francisco duo CHASMS craft percussive dirges with pummeling drum programming, hypnotizing guitar work and haunting vocals. Drawing upon the dreamy goth and post-punk of 1980s-era 4AD Records, Chasms combines familiar shoegaze affectations with the heaviness of doom metal, drone and industrial. Subtle Bodies is the band’s debut full-length record. It compiles a selection of tracks from their first two celebrated cassette EPs along with previously unreleased material onto milky clear vinyl. Loss, mortality and rebirth are each represented as individuals culminating into the amalgamous eleven-and-a-half minute closer, “Dissolution into Clear Light.”
