Rooting For Love by Sadier, Laetitia

Sadier, Laetitia

Rooting For Love
Drag City

***Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier issues a call to the traumatized civilizations of Earth: we’re urged to finally evolve past our countless millennia of suffering and alienation. Her songs score the complexities and harmonies within this directive: organ, guitar, bass, synth, trombone, vibraphone, live and programmed drums, and a vocal assembly of men and women billed as The Choir, working intricate chord/tempo/and dynamic changes, as Laetitia’s empathic presence leads the way.

Something Shines by Sadier, Laetitia

Something Shines
Drag City

***LAETITIA SADIER’s (STEREOLAB) new album has just been delivered, and it’s a joy! Something Shines was recorded and matured more slowly than either Silencio or The Trip. It took nine months, and you know what that means, baby! New life.... Something Shines was initially recorded in Switzerland, where Laetitia’s collaborator DAVID collects amazing old keyboards and organs from people who have inherited them but find no space or usage for them—so they let go of these useless things for a symbolic franc. Scattered through Europe are the component players of the Something Shines band; drummmer EMMANUEL MARIO in Paris and bassist XAVI MUNOZ in Castellon near Valencia, so additional parts were laid down in those cities. The strings were done in St. Etienne by JEAN-CHRISTOPHE CHANTE, whom Laetitia had met on a tour with French band, and friends, Angil in the fall; she found his playing mesmerizing and felt compelled to ask him if he would like to participate on her album—which he did, bringing a great emotional charge to the record. Laetitia recorded a lot of the content in London, including all the vocals, guitars, additional electronics and soundtrack effects as well as final mixing, which wrapped up this Spring. The desire was for the songs of Something Shines to alternate between a riveting caress and an invigorating shake. To start from the Earth and to tilt up, towards the sky, before coming back down to the planet again. Additionally, Something Shines is an exploration—yes another—through Debord’s La Société...

***BACK IN PRINT!!! Born from a similar, natural need for stillness as well as agitation, LAETITIA SADIER (STEREOLAB, MONADE) delivers her follow-up solo LP, Silencio—an album exploring the individual connection to a deeper self placed in a broader environment, in a similarly fresh kind of way. The album opens with “The Rule of the Game,” a song inspired by Jean Renoir’s 1939 film La Regle Du Jeu, thematically taking the ruling classes’ responsibility for the rise of fascism as its focus. “Auscultation to the Nation” comments on the monetary system, literally translated from a rant by a France Inter phone-in listener who questioned the political legitimacy of our monetary leaders. Who needs leaders when you have friends and cohorts? Silencio features some exciting collaboration: “Next Time You See Me” is a new jammer with former Stereolabber, TIM GANE; and musical drifter-man JAMES ELKINGTON provides writing for two tracks, “Fragment pour le future de l’homme” and “There Is A Price To Pay For Freedom (And It Isn’t Security),” in addition to recording and playing on much of the record. Of more concern is the singularity of Laetitia Sadier. That voice, the one that reaches you and wraps you up each time you hear it. Calm, direct. Cool and hot. If you’re unable to attain an inner connection with yourself, Laetitia will connect to it, for you. Silencio is your human modem.
