***"Welcome Strawberry will release their new album Desperate Flower at the end of the month, and I already have a feeling it’s gonna be soundtracking a lot of my beach days this summer. So far the Oakland dream pop/shoegaze band have shared “Violets & Honey” and the lead single “Memory Cube,” the latter of which we named one of the Best Songs Of The Week. Today Welcome Strawberry are sharing Desperate Flower‘s final single, which just so happens to be its title track and is also quite good. It has a nice melodic jangle inspired by bands like Apples In Stereo and Neutral Milk Hotel, but with a whole lot of guitar feedback and reverb. And at nearly five minutes long, it can easily put you in a very pleasant trance if you let it."—Abby Jones (Stereogum). Pressed on canary yellow vinyl.

***"This 4 song EP also made a big splash for us towards the end of last year, hot off their East Coast tour with Pocket Full of Crumbs. For relatively new upstarts, they're already such a beloved band. their sound on this one is grungy in tone but undeniably gorgeous and delicate shoegaze (though the band rejects the gaze label) with chords and song structure more inspired by 90's emo and vocals inspired by Sade."

***"This is probably our biggest release to date in terms of, shit everything I guess. People seem to love them a lot. SF based slowcore, emo, indie. Members of Outhouse (SF DIY punk event legends), Wife, and more. The band has done extensive touring, including all of the west coast and some east coast stuff too, so maybe this one would get picked up more broadly. This one's only available on cassette."

***"Buddy Junior’s 'RUST' captivates with emotive shoegaze and introspective lyrics, offering a raw, immersive journey from vulnerability to strength. In the shadowed alleys of San Francisco’s vibrant music scene, Buddy Junior emerges with 'RUST,' a track that reverberates with the raw energy of shoegaze and the introspective depth of emo. The song, born from a moment of acute vulnerability and fear, encapsulates the essence of a band unafraid to delve into the darker recesses of human experience. 'RUST' unfolds like a confession, with lyrics that paint a vivid picture of anxiety and the struggle for clarity amidst life’s tumultuous moments. The band’s ability to channel the intensity of an emotional ordeal into their music is palpable from the first chord. The track’s sonic landscape is a meticulously crafted chaos, where distorted guitars and relentless percussion create a backdrop for vocals that oscillate between a whisper and a howl, embodying the song’s thematic tension between despair and resilience. Buddy Junior’s approach to songwriting is refreshingly unfiltered, offering a glimpse into personal moments of fragility with a rawness that is both jarring and cathartic. 'RUST' doesn’t just aim to narrate an incident; it invites listeners to feel the weight of the metal rod, the sting of tears, and the relief of sight preserved. It’s this immersive storytelling, coupled with the band’s deft blend of genres, that sets 'RUST' apart as a standout track. As the song progresses, the initial shock gives way to a reflective resolve, mirrored in the shift from frenetic...

***Maybe songs grow like flowers. You water them or let them wilt. Eventually you have enough to pick and make a bouquet, ugly thorny or not. Welcome Strawberry's statement of a debut draws musical influence from genres like shoegaze, psychedelic, and indie rock—however Cyrus, the brain behind the music, sources the record's primarily influences as film (especially those of Gregg Araki), literature (think My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Moshfegh), and nineties video games like Tekken. The results are carefully stitched fantasias for future and present daydreams. Welcome Strawberry is currently located in Oakland.

***"I never did sleep well in this society" screams Vanessa on the opening track of Cheree's Factory. As you might expect from an industrial/noise/punk debut, their sound is characterized by harsh pummeling guitars over a pounding drum machine with biting vocals spitting anti-capitalist lyrics, feedback, and the occasional sample. Cheree is a 4-piece band from Oakland, CA, that started in 2021 and in the short time they've been playing as a band, they've earned a reputation as the bay area's loudest and best industrial projects in a while. LP pressed on limited clear vinyl in an edition of 200 copies.
